The Spit
Orick, California

After attending the California Travel Park Association's Unit #12 April meeting, we let them know we would announce the National Forest Service new rules concerning the spit at Orick. Initially, the service will hire additional folks to hand out flyers with the new guidelines amd be assigned to the spit. Starting in October, there will be a fee (to yet be announced) to camp overnight, which will be collected by these new hirees. Day use will still be allowed. Signs, according to the Forest Service will be posted at locations on the spit.

After three years, around April 1, 2003, it will convert to DAY USE ONLY.

From the campground point of view - we heard this comment,"... on any given day it is the largest campground in Northern California. It affects all of our business."

From the campers point of view - we stopped by the spit on our way back through to Eureka and talked with a few of the "spitters". " There should be someplace free we can stay that we can be on the beach," said Harry from Toronto. Gene from Washington State said that ," they've already made it where we can't take motorized boats into the fresh water side. I like boondocking." And Phyliss from Florida said she was on her way to Alaska and, "I've stayed here the last eight years on this trip. It's a shame something this nice has to go away."

Concerns have also come to the front about illegal dumping of black and grey water tanks in the area. And that there is no security at night along the highway and no immediate services if a truck or camper should leave the road and hit the line of sleeping campers.
