Girl Scouts Sing These Favorite Camping Tunes

Of the many Girl Scout traditions, singing is the one often preferred by Girl Scouts. It’s a bonding activity that the girls enjoy and derive great benefit from, especially when on a camping trip.

One of the favorite Girl Scout songs for younger girls is the “Brownie Song”. It’s often the first song girls learn when they join Girl Scouts and the one that they continue singing long after they have moved beyond Brownies.

“The Brownie Smile Song”

I have something in my pocket
That belongs across my face.

I keep it very close to me
In a most convenient place.

I’ll bet you’ll never guess it
If you guess a long, long while.

So I’ll take it out and put it on
It’s a great big Brownie smile!

In Girl Scouts there’s an emphasis on the element of the Girl Scout law that suggests girls “be a sister to every Girl Scout”. In that vein, the friendship song is always popular. It’s a good song to sing as the girls come together for a friendship circle after an activity or before or after the campfire.

“Make New Friends”

Make new friends but keep the old.
One is silver and the other gold.

A circle is round, it has no end.
That’s how long I want to be your friend.

I have a hand, and you have another.
Put them together and we have each other.

Now, it’s not Boy Scouts that have all the silly camping fun. Girl Scouts can have some fun, too, and they like to badger and nitpick their leaders in a silly and jolly way. This camp song sung to the tune of “Frère Jacques” is one good example.

In the Girl Scouts, in the Girl Scouts
We can camp, we can camp
All the tents are heated, all the tents are heated.
Not not not!!! Not not not!!!
In the Girl Scouts, in the Girl Scouts
We can cook, we can cook
Our leaders do the dishes, our leaders do the dishes.
Not not not!!! Not not not!!!
In the Girl Scouts, in the Girl Scouts
We party all night, we party all night
Our leaders let us do it, our leaders let us do it.
Not not not!!! Not not not!!!
In the Girl Scouts, in the Girl Scouts
We use latrines, we use latrines
And we love to clean them, and we love to clean them
Not not not!!! Not not not!!!
In the Girl Scouts, in the Girl Scouts
We can hike, we can hike
And all the trails are down hill, and all the trails are downhill
Not not not!!! Not not not!!!

And because the Girl Scouts enjoy spending time together, no matter the reason, this song is always popular, particularly when camp is over and the group is separating for a time. It’s “The More We Get Together.”

The more we get together
Together, together,
The more we get together,
The happier we'll be.
For your friends are my friends
and my friends are your friends
The more we get together
The happier we'll be
