North Dakota Campgrounds

North Dakota is a beautiful state with many unique areas to explore. One of them is the North Dakota Badlands, a mixture of breathtaking cliffs and rock formations carved out by rivers that ran through the area thousands of years before. The scenic terrain of these formations has drawn adventurous travelers to the area for many years, and there are a variety of North Dakota campgrounds in the Badlands for you to stay at when you visit.

Cottonwood Campground

Nestled in the South Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park within the Badlands, this 76-site campground is perfect for those wanting to explore the park and the area surrounding it. The Theodore Roosevelt National Park holds many activities for campers. You can visit Teddy Roosevelt’s cabin, view the Elkhorn Ranch, or visit the beautiful Painted Canyon.

The camping facilities here are primitive and are not for the faint of heart. There is no water, sewer, or electricity hookups, and only flush toilets and sinks in the restrooms. The $10 price per night is modest though you do get to stay within the national park. The views from your campsite during your stay will more than make up for the lack of amenities.

Medora Campground

For those who wish to see the Badlands but want a somewhat more luxurious stay, the Medora Campground offers a host of modern amenities. Located in the town of Medora just nine miles from the Teddy Roosevelt National Park, this 200-site campground has laundry and shower facilities, as well as a nearby golf course and full service hookups.

The prices are higher at the Medora Campground—the range is $18-$35 per night. Here you can relax under the cottonwood trees or take a dip in the community pool, after a long day of exploring the Badlands.

Watford City Tourist Park

This North Dakota campground is small but satisfying. Since it only has eight sites, reservations need to be made in advance, but amenities like an on-site playground, horseshoe pit, and a Frisbee golf course make the effort worthwhile.

The price is around $10 per night and there are even waterfront stream access sites available. Water, electricity, showers, and an on-site dump station are all included, and help to make this campground a good choice for families traveling with children.

White Buffalo Campground

There are no frills at this rustic campground, but it is located within the Badlands and in close proximity to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. There are 30 sites available at approximately $10 per night, with electricity, water and sewer hookups. What the park lacks in extra amenities it makes up for with its grassy location and quiet atmosphere.

This campground is family-friendly and allows pets, so it will work for any type of traveler. There are plenty of shade trees to relax under after exploring the local Badlands area.

Juniper Campground

Located within the North Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, this 44-unit campground offers another alternative for those who wish to stay on-site within the park. Again the campsites are primitive, with no water, sewer, or electrical hookups, and only basic bathroom facilities are available.

Pets are allowed, but be aware that often there are bison wandering throughout the campground, so you may want to keep your pets on a leash. The beautiful settings of the park make this an ideal location for those who wish to soak up everything the Badlands has to offer.

With so many choices of North Dakota Campgrounds in the Badlands area, it is easy to find an ideal camping location for any kind of traveler. Whether you are adventurous or want all the comforts of home, there is a campground that can meet your needs. Regardless of which campground you choose, the beautiful scenery and intriguing wildlife of the Badlands will be sure to take your breath away.
