Abingdon Manor
Every day thousands of people drive right past one of the Souths' treasures and don't even know it. Just off Interstate 95 is 8,000 square foot of living space with 2,000 square feet of porches and verandas. It is a monument to true southern elegance.
Latta, South Carolina
Michael Griffey met me at the entry with a smile and open hand shake. As I took it, the surroundings started to stand out. The entryway was open to both parlors, as well as the library and breakfast areas, and could easily make over a hundred people comfortable.
As he took me on the rest of the tour, of this Four Diamond Winner, it was very evident that Michael would have been a success in any field. He was a natural. He introduced me to his wife, Patty. She was a CPA before the B&B and does the cooking at the inn. Sounds like the perfect match for this "Perfect" B&B.
The hot tub was ready on the back porch and had a privacy screen. There was sherry in the library and soft terry robes in the closet. Wine and cheese were waiting at 6:30 and dinner is served with reservations around 7:30.
My room was the Yellow Room. It had one of the 11 fireplaces at the Manor. A TV with remote, private bath with a shower/tub, and two full size beds with feather beds on top finished out the room. There was bottled water and glasses beside the beds. All the amenities were there and any that you may need were simply a request away.
Michael organized a restaurant review at Shuler's BBQ so I left early to get some photos outside as well. A short drive later I was enjoying real southern pit cooked BBQ.
After working on today's photos, visiting with two couples also staying at the inn and a great soak in the hot tub I called it a day. Moments after my head hit the pillow... well all I remember is waking up feeling fresh and ready to go again. The smell of breakfast was in the air.
The gourmet breakfast started with baked grapefruit. It was coated with brown sugar and a touch of sherry. It just slid down and I caught myself ummmming... Cindy would have stopped me, if she had come a long.
Next was the Fiesta Souffle. Bacon, toast and homemade blackberry jam with a choice of teas and apple juice served in front of another fireplace made the stay complete.
It goes without saying that you have to find this treasure. This Greek Revival mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
