The Battenkill Inn
Manchester, Vermont

The day was sweltering when we arrived at the Battenkill and we were extremely pleased to see the "air conditioned" part of their sign! Yoshi and Lani spent a good deal of time and effort to get the motorhome hooked up so that Lexxus could have some cool air as well. After over an hour and several different attempts by Yoshi to get it running without blowing a breaker, we finally had to admit defeat. We later found out that the entire electric grid for the area was simply overloaded. But, we certainly appreciated all the efforts he made!

Our hosts went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. We took a photo-taking drive until it cooled off a little and then returned to the Inn. Located at the base of Mount Equinox, the 1840 Victorian farmhouse has high ceilings and marble fireplaces. The home was built as a wedding gift for the original owner's bride. All the studs in the home are oak, a hardwood that is not native to Vermont. The Inn is a favorite destination for fishermen who love the exceptional angling along the banks of the Battenkill. It is located very near to the Orvis outlet, as well.

Our room was spacious, air conditioned and had French doors that opened onto the back porch overlooking the pond. While Mike worked on his photos, I sat on the porch with a book and enjoyed the evening. The comfortable bed and private bath made the night a success.

There is a guest refrigerator in the foyer and a wine and snack time is offered to all guests from 5-7 each evening. There is always coffee and cookies available in the parlor. A phone and modem hookup are also available along with books, magazines and menus for local restaurants.

Breakfast the next morning was another wonderful treat. When you are at the Battenkill, be sure to try the chocolate, chocolate-chip muffin -- it's positively evil! We started with cranberry juice, coffee and tea along with a fresh fruit cup of cantaloupe, watermelon, grapefruit, orange and nectarine and a basket full of fresh, homemade muffins - including that wicked chocolate one! Following was raspberry & cream cheese stuffed French toast with Vermont maple sausage. Absolutely fantastic!
