Cornelius Daly Inn
Eureka, California

Victorian elegance with modern convenience is waiting for you in Eureka. We were excited about finally getting to the Daly Inn. We had heard so many great things about the inn and its owners. Both were fantastic. Sue and Gene Clinesmith were just returning from the PAII 2000 meeting in Hilton Head, SC, when we arrived.

Sue showed us to our room. The Garden View Suite has a queen size bed with lots of pillows. In the sitting room are large windows that over look the rear gardens and gave me a perfect view of The Eagle II. It is furnished with English walnut antiques and Victorian reproduction wall coverings and accessories. The closet holds 2 terry robes and slippers as well as umbrellas for guest use. The bath has a tub and shower and an antique dressing table. As with all the rooms of this great old home, there are renovated antique radiators that came in every size and shape.

Downstairs in the common room, we joined Sue and Gene for the wine, cheese and crackers. As always the questions about how we got started doing this came up. We do love telling our story. Sue told us about another local inn wanting us to review them so keep checking back for another great inn in Eureka.

A young couple from Reno, Nevada on vacation to British Columbia came in with their two kids and I just found it funny that had this been the lobby of a hotel no one would have paid them any attention. Yet, here was Gene doting over the children and I was taking pictures. This is a missing link to kids today but it's almost like visiting family. This is just another advantage that the bed & breakfast inn has over a hotel!

Cindy decided to take the evening off and got into her new floor length terry robe and read while sitting in the breeze over looking the gardens. We took showers and then I worked on all the photos for the day. We only took around 900 today. Cindy drifted off in the middle of a page and Lexxus was tucked safely into RV. I finally transferred the photos to disk and headed off to a great peaceful sleep.

Breakfast was in the sunlit dining room. The table was elegant and the chandelier was perfect. For breakfast we started with coffee, tea and and orange fluff. There were fresh hot cranberry/walnut scones. Then Sue entered with a luscious poached pear with blackberries. This was soon followed by apple puff pancakes with sliced strawberries and link sausage.

And there was Gene getting out toys for the older child, getting him going and then coming over and playing with the little baby so the young couple could enjoy their breakfast. These folks have been at it 10 years and that speaks volumes. They have almost remodeled the whole house and Gene feels it'll be complete soon. Then he wants to continue to run the Inn and enjoy his efforts along with all his guests.

Sue signed our travel book, offered us traveling directions and was off to get ready for her next guests, we knew they were in for a treat! So, visit the website for Cornelius Daly Inn, make your reservations and be sure to tell them Cruising America made the recommendation!
