Bluefield, West Virginia

Sandra Hancock watched the property for years, wishing she could fix it up and make it the talk of the town. And one day her dream came true. The phone rang and so did opportunity.
"I love doing this," said ex-realtor Sandra. "Seven guest rooms keeps me busy." But, she gleamed as she took us on a delightful tour of the Dian-Lee House. Listening to her sweet southern accent was worth the trip alone, but she showed us so much more on the tour that by the time we arrived at our room, The George Washington, we were enchanted. The entrance hall features a baby grand piano, a very old pipe organ and a gorgeous staircase covered in plush red carpet. The study was rich, dark and made me feel at ease as it led me into a beautiful sunroom with a fountain and plants everywhere, the perfect place for a quiet retreat.
Our room had air conditioning, tapestry rugs, color TV with remote control, a large closet with extra pillows, ironing board, iron & hangers, 2 side chairs, a marble-top dresser, a queen size brass bed, a separate desk with lamp and clock, large conference table which doubled as a desk for Cindy with all her work. On this table there was a telephone and nearby an extra phone jack! There was a kitchenette complete with 4-burner stove & oven, small refrigerator, microwave, small appliances, and all the linens and tableware you would need. Our private bath had a hand-held shower in the old-fashioned, deep porcelain tub that was great. Lots of thick towels were provided as well as toothpaste, shampoo, soaps....everything you may have forgotten.
Winter skiing and whitewater rafting are only 40-45 minutes away. Interstate 73 should open the corridor soon, although Bluefield is right off I-77 now. This is the perfect stop for the business traveler and the Dian-Lee House caters to executive travelers year-round and is looking forward to the new Heart Center currently under construction in Bluefield.
 | Soon it was time for dinner and Sandra suggested Little Italy on Commerce Street. It was fabulous! Our waiter Chris, a student at Bluefield College, introduced us to Vinnie & Nick Hakaj, the owners, who made us feel right at home. We even took home the T-bone from my steak for Lexxus! |
Upon returning to the Dian-Lee House, we realized just how well our room was furnished and the air conditioning had been turned on to high for us, so the room was perfect, since the area is presently experiencing a record heat wave! (A special thanks to Sandra - she graciously allowed us to plug in the motorhome, so that Lexxus could also get some relief from the heat!)
Breakfast begins at 6:30 am, and continues until 9, again catering to the executive who needs to head out early. A simple breakfast is served. We chose the ham and cheese omelet, bran cereal and pastries. We enjoyed fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee & tea. I enjoyed the sweet canteloupe, bananas and apples available. I couldn't get over how sweet the canteloupe was. The windows and decorations in the new breakfast room shows Sandra's keen eye at its best!
As we pulled out for our next destination, the birds were chirping and it was a beautiful day in Bluefield, West Virginia.
