Float Plane Lodge & Cabins
Homer, AK

The Lodge and Cabins are all hand built by Ron Nieman. He takes logs, shores them and creates his masterpiece. He says he has built his last cabin, but stay tuned, he has a lot of energy.

Ron greeted us and took us to the lodge. There was a huge paper maché bear in the corner that accented the room nicely. An enormous stone fireplace also highlighted the Alaskan decor. Ron told us of the package plans that the Lodge offers. These can include fly-in fishing and bear viewing as well as lots of other adventures. Make a whole week of your stay here and you're sure not to get bored! As we discussed our adventures, his wife, Nancy came home and took over for him. Ron went right back to his woodwork.

Nancy took us on the tour. Most of the cabins are dupexes with large rooms and all with private baths. There was a large hot tub for us to use and a wooden walkway between all the cabins.

Our cabin had two queen beds, TV/VCR, table and chairs at the window overlooking the lake, kitchenette with sink, hot plate, microwave oven, refrigerator, toaster, coffeemaker plus dishes and silverware! The bath had a tub/shower combination. Everything was spotless.

It had a front porch with chairs and a veiw of the lake that was spectacuar. We watched the planes return with some of the guests from remote areas. They had been fishing and many talked about all the bear they had seen. Imade some movies of the plane as he returned to pick up more fishermen

After Cindy showered, we went out to the Homer Spit and ate at the world famous, Land's End Restuarant. We were as far as you could go in Alaska. Across the bay we saw land where there are no roads. It amazed us that folks actually lived across there in the wild and many had built homes.

We returned to the cabin and Cindy read while I tried to get our email at the lodge. Again the remoteness made it impossible. So I returned to the cabin to sleep.

The next morning I found our continental breakfast had already been delivered to our room while we were at dinner the night before. By next season, the main lodge building will be completed and the Lodge will offer full breakfasts as well as lunch and dinner from their commercial kitchen. All of this is included in their various packages that they offer, so be sure to check it out!

Again it was time for the road. But, when planning your vacation in Homer, check out the website for Homer's Floatplane Lodge, make your reservations and be sure to tell them Cruising America sent you!

This review was set up for us by Kim at the Soldotna Visitor Information Center, so be sure to stop by and tell her we said Hi!
