Gillum House Bed & Breakfast

Upon arriving at The Gillum House, we were taken on a tour of the home. We stayed in the Gillum Room, one of three guests rooms at the Gillum House. Guest rooms are on the second floor, with a shared bath, and filled with the many paintings by John Panek as well as antiques and collectibles. There is a common area in addition to the dining room, which was chock-full of a doll collection that was started by Kathleen's aunt. Outside are growing the many herbs she uses in her delightful recipes. Kathleen then guided us to the historic Levi Shinn Log House and from there we took a self-guided tour of the town - a wonderful small town!

The Gillum Room has a queen four poster bed with pillowtop mattress and downfilled comforter. An air-conditioner and TV made us feel even more at home. The heatwave is still on-going and it felt great. In our room, as in each guest room, a fresh carnation, thick terry robes and a bowl of fresh fruit awaited our arrival.

We visited with John and the boys on the front porch for awhile before finally turning in after a long day of sight-seeing. This area is beautiful and with the advent of the walking trail and plans for the pool, it is only beginning to take shape as a "KEY" place to visit or stay in West Virginia.

The Gillum House Bed & Breakfast participates, along with a B&B in Fairmont, on a package for travelers along the West Fork River Trail. These include walkers, bicyclists and horseback riders. From whichever destination the traveler departs, they will receive a picnic lunch and drink for along the way. At the end of the trail, that B&B will provide them with a home-cooked dinner and lodging for the night. Be sure to ask about these unique packages!

The presentation of both breakfast and lunch were stunning. For breakfast, we had baked pineapple toast with West Virginia maple syrup, a fruit dish with cantaloupe, strawberries, grapes, honeydew melon and kiwi, pumpkin-chocolate chip mini muffins (made with real pumpkin!), guava and orange juice, coffee & tea.

The media luncheon consisted of fresh green salad, vegetarian lasagna (with Kathleen's homemade pasta), freshly made French bread, coffee and tea.

This town is very lucky to have Kathleen looking out for and assisting in its development. Between the Bed & Breakfast, grandkids visiting, contacting local media and establishments about our arrival, working on local projects and community goals and planning for a large breakfast and lunch our hostess Kathleen Panek had her plate quite full. She performed with the mastery that all Bed & Breakfast owners seem to have aqcuired, never misssing a click.
She is truly one of Shinnston's finest jewels.
