Herren House
Waynesville, NC

The trip from Flat Rock to Waynesville was out of a postcard. I stopped and took pictures of Looking Glass Falls. This really is a beautiful part of North Carolina. This is the "Gateway To The Smokies"!

One block from Main St. is the Herren House. It was originally built as a boarding house and has continued to improve since. The home has been completely restored and the six rooms enhanced. One is equipped for wheelchair accommodation. The new hardwood floor sparkles. Everything was ready.

I arrived and was greeted by Jackie Blevins. After the tour she explained that there are more than 250 waterfalls nearby. Her inn was spotless and she led me to the Lucille Room. It had a private bath with claw foot tub, fireplace, TV with remote, dresser, sitting chairs and three lamps. The large closet had extra pillows and a heating blanket if needed.

Frank came home and we visited for a while before he called Stefano's (an Italian restaurant) and made sure they could take me.

A short walk up the hill led me to a great dinner. Bernie, the host, seated me and noticed my Woodstock T-shirt. He had been at the original one. He told me to greet my waitress as a "Deadhead" (Grateful Dead Fan--- Jerry Garcia). Teresa was shocked when I said, " So you're a Deadhead?" She turned towards Bernie and we all laughed. After a great dinner, I took the short walk home.

I worked on my daily pictures and then called Cindy from the English-style phone booth that was in the entry way. It was a unique feature. Then I returned to Lucille and drifted off in the king size bed. I woke to breakfast and I hurried into the large eating area.

Looking through the French doors, I spied a table next to the four picturesque windows. Flowers brightened the room. Soft music played as Frank brought in Jackie's treats. Fresh orange juice, tea and a fruit bowl of bananas, strawberries, oranges, pineapple and whipped cream with a cherry started the meal. Then came chocolate orange scones and French apple butter muffins. The main course was Quesadilla with cheese and topped with sour cream. There were 11 choices of different chicken sausage. I chose the Michigan Dried Cherry with toasted almonds. Boy, was I full.

Another gourmet breakfast success down, I got ready to go. Jackie autographed a personal copy of her cookbook for me and it is something I'll cherish. She also signed our travel book. It was time to say good bye and head off down the road again. Make sure you check 'em out and book a real vacation.
