Maple Meadows B&B
Point Roberts, Washington

"We have the largest gated community in the U.S. and the safest," said a local resident with a big smile, at a restaurant. "And the government are the guards."

I thought rather strange that we had to go into Canada to get to our last stop in Washington, but I knew the experience would be interesting and it was. We had been warned that the time to go between the borders could take hours, so we hit the Canadian border about 7 am. The guard asked us about five questions and we proceeded. At the American border headed into Point Roberts, the lady just smiled and said," Have a good day!" We arrived at 8 am and had no idea where or how to spend the hours until check in at the B&B.

We drove around the circle of Point Roberts and found out where the B&B was located. Drove around the harbor area a few times and then settled at the International Market. We played yatzhee and talked about all the places on out schedule in Canada. Then I took a nap , while Cindy worked on some files to send up later in the evening.

We arrived at Maple Meadows early and were greeted by Terry & Keith LaPorte and taken on a tour of their 1910 home. She explained that the B&B also was home to lots of animals and she introduced us to them as we came across them. They were delightful and really added to the charm of the home. Then she took us to "The Old Pump House". It was a beautiful cottage, that had at one time served to furnish water to about half of the residents in Point Roberts.

The cottage boasted a queen size bed with down comforter and lots of pillows, a TV, fresh flowers, small table and chairs, delightful antiques and private bath with shower. Just outside were chairs perched on the terrace overlooking the grounds and the mountains in the distance.

The grounds were covered in flowers and neat antiques. There was a working windmill, that Keith had bought and completely put together on his own.

Cindy retrieved the email in the main house while I took pictures of the grounds and even walked the two blocks to the beach and took pictures across the bay of Vancouver, B.C.

When I got back, there was wine, crackers and cheeses waiting for a snack and Terry had organized a review for us at Brewster's Restaurant for that evening. We got back and sat on the front porch of the cottage, enjoying the nice evening breeze coming in from the ocean. Terry brought a new addition to the farm, Montana, a beautiful foal just a few weeks old, over for us to take pictures of. It was fun watching the colt run behind his mother. Then I went in to catch the next game of the NBA Championship and Cindy settled in with one of the many books at the B&B.

The next morning, the weather promised a gorgeous day and breakfast was served on the porch of the main house. We started with a fruit dish of peaches, watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, mango, grapes and a berry juice made of cranberries, blueberries and bumble berries, along with coffee and tea. Next came Belgian waffles with strawberries, homemade strawberry syrup and venison medallions. And still more.....fresh hot cinnamon rolls! What a great start!

In addition to the bed & breakfast, they also have a rental home available for stays of one week or longer. The home has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, washer/dryer, refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave and all the dishes and linens you will need! The home has a wraparound porch and a fully fenced back yard and is located just across the street from the community tennis courts.

These folks are delightful and very involved in their community. They will make your stay much more than memorable, so check out their Website, book a long stay and tell them Cruising America said "Hi"!
