The Salmon House On The Hill
West Vancouver, British Columbia

Many thanks to Beachside Bed & Breakfast for planning this wonderful dinner review for us! On our arrival, our hostess seated us at the best table in the house, next to the windows over looking Vancouver just across the waterway and West Vancouver, just below. Boy, what a view! We knew this was going to be a great dining experience.

One of the first things we noticed as we walked to our table was the tribal masks that adorn the walls of the restaurant and the huge log supports that have been carved as totem poles as well. The were very unique. Also two boats, used in the earlier part of the century, hung from the ceiling. Each had a history to tell.

I went out onto the deck and took pictures of the bay and city below us. An ocean liner from Holland was passing under The Lion's Gate Bridge. Later, Gordy at the Beachside B&B would tell us that this ship will be soon under the American Flag and take people on cruises around the Hawaiian Islands.

When I returned to our table, Claudia, the Manager for the evening, came over and introduced herself and made sure everything was okay. She and Susie, our waitress, did this a few times, which really impressed us. It was nice to know that our enjoyment of the meal meant something to them. I offered to take a staff photo for them and within minutes we were all out on the balcony, taking the pictures. They were all great people. The owners should really be proud of their staff.

Our waitress made suggestions for drinks, dinner and dessert. I started off with a tequila sunrise and Cindy had the tropical martini. For an appetizer, Cindy chose the lentil bean soup with smoked bacon, while I selected the shrimp cocktail on a bed of greens with a caper/horseradish sauce. And this was only the beginning!

For our entrees, Cindy was "daring" (for her) tonight and ordered pan seared Thresher Shark with norsetti caper butter. I opted for the mixed Seafood Grill, which included Fanny Bay oysters, prawns and BC salmon, all topped with a sauce made of white wine, mustard and capicolli cream. This all came with rice pilaf and bokchoy and sea asparagus and whole grain rolls and butter. And then came dessert! On Susie's recommendation, Cindy ordered the tira misu and I selected the raspberry rhubarb strudel with white chocolate ice cream.

The entire meal was fabulous, from the oysters, which were absolutely the best I've eaten....to the tira misu, which Cindy says just melted in her mouth! Oh, what an evening of fine dining. We felt guilty again for having had such a great time, but we had to make our goodbyes and head back to another night at our fabulous B&B.

The next time you are in Vancouver and looking for that special place for dinner...with a view...with atmosphere....with fabulous food....be sure to stop by The Salmon House, and let them know that Cruising America made the recommendation!
