The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek
Mendocino, California

The drive along Hwy 20 from Hwy 101 to Hwy 1 was glorious. It was a great day for the drive. In the week we had spent in Garberville, the buds on the trees had blossomed and the birds were singing everywhere as we slipped past the historic village of Mendocino.

Just south of town, we found our hosts for the evening, The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek. Penny & Al Greenwood met us and Penny took us on the tour of the property after she showed us to Hawthorne Cottage, our home for the night. She also allowed us a peek into some of the other rooms and cottages for more great photos!

The thing which struck us the most was the privacy each cottage offered. Guests could meet each other at the wine and cheese hour in the evening or the next morning at breakfast inside the historic 1862 Ledford House. But, for the night, you were alone in your own little world.

While Cindy organized our weekly mail delivery and checked the email, I ambled down to the cove. This cove is very special and is actually a private beach, but is something literally right out of the movies.

Our cottage had it's own kitchen, with everything you needed but the food, living room with both electric heat and a woodburner, dining table, sofa and chairs and a bedroom with queen size bed (with another of those wonderful down comforters!), day bed, dresser, closet and overstuffed chair. Both the living room and the bedroom had French doors which opened onto our private deck in the back of the cottage. The bath boasted a walk-in shower and 2-person Jacuzzi tub, lots of thick towels and candles to set the mood.

The living room also had a cabinet housing a TV/VCR. But, after dinner at MacCallum House Restaurant, sorting the mail, and a morning massage for me, it never even got turned on! The Inn is one of several along the coast who will make arrangements for guests to have a therapeutic massage right at their lodgings! Donna from The Body Works did a great job.

Breakfast is served buffet style and offered just about everything! We started with coffee and tea, choice of juice (apple, orange and cranberry). There was an assortment of cold cereals available, fresh fruit cups, buttermilk basil scones, apricot stuffed French toast and an assortment of breads, including banana and cranberry.

When venturing along the California coast and visiting historic Mendocino, stop by the website for Inn at Schoolhouse Creek and be sure to tell them Cruising America sends our best wishes!
