Shuler's Bar-B-Que
Abingdon Manor had organized a review for me at one of their favorite restaurants. I showed up early to get pictures of this large Appalachian Style log cabin overlooking a 4 acre lake full of ducks and Canadian Geese. I got some great photos for the 2001 Travel CD.
Latta, South Carolina

My waitress seated me and put a roll of paper towels at the table. I looked around and noticed they were at the others already. First time I'd seen this. The choices were many as it was a huge 26 item buffet style all you could eat, including your dessert and beverage. WOW!!! I chose turnip greens, cornbread and chicken. I had banana pudding for dessert and sweet tea was my beverage.
Norman Hughes, the owner, came out from the kitchen and talked for awhile. "These recipes have been in my family for years. Dad did it for 15 years and I have been at it 5. A lot of places have gone to gas or electric for convenience. The secret is to cook it slow over oak and hickory coals in old fashioned closed BBQ pits.
KC, a regular customer, was enjoying his last meal at Shuler's as he was moving to Florida in the morning. "Lynne (Norm's wife) has been serving me these ribs for 5 years. I'm going to miss this place more than anything else in Latta. These have been the best ribs, I've had in my life. It is my third night here this week," he said rejoining his family for dinner.
Shuler's will cater events for you (803-752-4700) and are open for regular business Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 4:30pm til 9pm at 419 Hwy.38 W in Latta. As I left I heard the best suggestion.."Ya'll come again!"
