A Wildflower Inn
We had met Sue Rardin 3 years earlier at a B&B meeting in Powell, Wyoming....when we were just starting Cruising America. We had organized her as one of our first reviews in Laramie, Wyoming at the Stone Arch Inn as we left the state a year later. Snow prevented our arrival at her inn. Meanwhile during our travels, Sue had moved to Anchorage and opened another inn. Finally, with all of us in Anchorage, we arrived for her review at A Wildflower Inn.
Sue was so glad to see that we had finally made it. She told us she had been keeping up with our great adventure along the way. Again, we were shown the Alaskan custom and slippers were offered.
We sat and reminisced for a while and then Sue told us that we were in the Fireweed Room at the top of the stairs. It was then we noticed the wonderful furniture throughout the home, which Sue told us had been hand carved by her grandfather. s AI took pictures, the phone rang. It was another B&B owner calling to ask Sue to take a coffee break across the street at the New Saguya City Market. It is a famous Anchorage landmark. Cindy joined her and they were off. I took photos of the outside of the home and was able to get a few more the Blue Angels show taking place over Elmendorf AFB and Anchorage. Sue also has a son stationed there.
She has really become an Alaskan and loves her new life up here. It shows in the B&B and all the personal touches. Even her neighbors havequickly taken to her and one came over that evening to cut the grass for her.
Our room had a private sitting area, private bath with tub/shower combination, and in our bedroom was a queen bed with a feather bed, TV/VCR, alarm clock, table and 2 chairs, a double window fan, bathrobes, slippers, dresser with mirror, bookcase with lots of books about Alaska, quilts and comforters.
We went back to the City Market for dinner. I chose a Chinese plate, while Cindy had pizza. I could see why this market was so popular. It had everything! Later, we returned home and worked on reviews, took showers and headed off to bed.
The next morning we met Sue's son Joel, who had come over to help with the remodeling downstairs. The other guests of the inn had left very early that morning, so Sue joined us for breakfast. We started with fresh blueberries, coffee, tea and fruit smoothies. Next came salmon breakfast pie and pumpkin raisin muffins. Too soon, it was time for us to leave. But, we will be returning to Anchorage in about 10 days to attend a local charity fishing festival and other festivities. We provided Sue with some press releases and we're sure she will have our weekend organized for us when we return!
A Wildflower Inn is conveniently located to all the downtown attractions and within walking distance of most. The Inn has been open for less than 2 years, but she is booking steadily, so when planning your trip to Anchorage, be sure to contact Sue for reservations and tell her that Cruising America made the recommendation.
